Bwindi impenetrable national park is one of the 10 parks in Uganda that is mostly known for its largest gorilla habitat hosting almost half of the world’s remaining population of mountain gorillas. The park is located in south western Uganda at the edge of the Albertine rift.

The Bwindi impenetrable national park population is divided into 50 gorilla families and 13 solitary individuals however only 21 of the families are habituated and can be accessed by visitors in tracking the four regions of Buhoma, Rushaga then Nkuringo.


This sector has seven habituated gorilla families that can be visited by the tourists and these are;

Habinyanja gorilla family

This family has got 18 members including 2 silverbacks located in buhoma sector. This sector was first visited in 1999 by tourists, its name habinyanja comes from the word Nyanja meaning water body. referring to the swamp in Bwindi impenetrable national park where the group was first sighted. this family is the most family with a lot of drama that occurred by the power struggles between the dominant silverbacks struggling for dominance. currently the leader of this group is Kisho the shrewd alpha female.

Mubare gorilla family

This family is believed to have been the first family to be habituated for tracking and the habituation started in 1991 and the name comes after the stunning mubare hills in which the group was first discovered. The family has 9 members including 1 silver back in buhoma. This group started with 12 members led by chief Ruhondeza the dominant silverback, however due to fights with different groups this group lost its several members including ruhondeza who was a care taker and the group remained with five members for several years until 2013 when other four members including a new silverback joined the group and now its an amazing family to visit.

Rushegura gorilla family

This family was habituated in 200 for tracking in buhoma sector and its first tourists were received in 2022. It has 19 members including one silver back in buhoma grounds however it started with 12 members inclusive of 5 females.

This family is very calm and in the past years they used to cross the boarders and visit the DR. Congo once in a while but now returned and have always been in buhoma village.

Katwe gorilla family.

This family has got 7 members those are a silverback, 2 females ,2 blackbacks and 2 sub-adult females as by 2019. It’s the fourth and latest habituated gorilla group in buhoma sector led by the dominant silver back ‘Mahaane.

Kanywanyi gorilla family

This is one of the gorilla families that has been habituated for gorilla tourist in buhoma sector composed of 5 individuals and has just been integrated into the gorilla booking.


This is one of the 4 trekking sectors located in the eastern part of Bwindi impenetrable national park.

Oruzogo family.

This is one of the gorilla families available for trekking, its name was acquired from the local plant known as Oruzogoto and was first visited in 2011 and the leadership of Tibirikwata who was the overall.

This was the largest and most popular in ruhija with 19 members where later in 2021 a silverback called kasimali left the family with some members leaving the group with only10 members including 1 silverback,4 black backs,2female adults,1sub-adult female,2sub-adult,1juvenile then 1infant. It is an interesting gorilla group in ruhija because of its playful power of the juveniles that offers massive entertainment to the trekkers.

Bitukura gorilla family.

This is another gorilla family available for daily trekking in the ruhiija sector named after the river where it was first sighted. It became ready for tourism in 2008 and it’s a home of about 14 members including Karamuzi the dominant silverback.

Kyaguliro A and B gorilla family.

This gorilla family was one of the earliest gorilla families to be habituated in Bwindi in 1995 but was being used for only research purposes. Kyaguliro was dominated by Zeus silverback at the time of habituation who was later taken over by Rukina for governance. Rukina was also taken over by Mukiza who took some members from the group to form his own family.

This led the kyaguliro group to split into two groups in 2016 that’s Kyaguriro A led by Rukara silverback as Rukina was struck by lightning in 2012 and Kyaguriro B dominated by the mighty Mukiza however both families are usually seen in one area.


Nkuringo sector is one of the gorilla trekking sector in the southern part of Bwindi impenetrable national park in Kisoro District.

Nkuringo gorilla family.

This was the first gorilla family to be habituated in southern part of Bwindi impenetrable national park in 1997, at the start it had a number of 17 members and the number kept on reducing to the current number of 12. It derived its name from Rukiga word Nkuringo which meant around the hill , this family was the first to record the birth of twins in Bwindi impenetrable national park and mostly known of spending 98% of their time outside the park. At the time of habituation, this gorilla group was under the leadership of an elderly silverback who was named NKURINGO and had three silverbacks namely Safari, Rafiki and Christmas.

This family is currently led by Rwamutwe black black in closer partnership with Tabu black black with the number of 12 individuals that’s 4 black blacks, 4 adult females and 2 infants.

Bushabo gorilla family

This the second gorilla family located in the nkuringo sector of Bwindi impenetrable national park. This was introduced in 2012 and some of its members were former members of the nkuringo family and others from non-habituated groups.

Currently it has 10 members where by a dominant silverback is Bahati ,1 black black3 adult females, 2 sub-adult females and 3 infants.

Christmas gorilla family.

This the newly or latest habituated gorilla family in the nkuringo sector of Bwindi impenetrable national park that is available for gorilla trekking.

It is composed of 9members and led by Christmas silver back who was once a member of the Nkuringo family.
