A gorilla permit is an essential document that allows any traveler taking part in gorilla tracking to visit the endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. This document is issued by (UWA) Uganda Wildlife Authority for Uganda and Rwanda development board for Rwanda to the travelers with an interest of gorilla tracking. In Uganda, the mountain gorillas are seen in only Bwindi impenetrable national park and Mgahinga gorilla national park both found in the south western part of Uganda, In Rwanda, the gorillas are viewed in the volcanoes national park then in democratic republic of Congo gorillas are found in the Virunga national park.

The cost of a gorilla permit.

This is the most crucial thing to note when planning a gorilla trekking tour, the prices of this gorilla permit keep on reducing and increasing from time to time both in Uganda and Rwanda. Due to the fact that the gorilla permit is the gate pass to view the habituated gorillas in their natural habitat, all visitors planning a gorilla trekking tour will be asked to pay the gorilla permit fees. In Uganda gorilla permit fees goes for USD700 per person tracking and in Rwanda the gorilla tracking permit costs USD1500per person, then the east African citizen pays UGX250,000 currently.

What is included in a gorilla permit.

A gorilla trekking permit includes;

  • Park entrance fees
  • One hour in the presence of the gorilla family, however gorilla trekking itself can go for 2 to 7 hours depending on the location of the gorillas.
  • Security fees are also included in a gorilla permit, when in the park be assured of safety due to the well-trained Uganda wildlife park rangers in the park.
  • The gorilla permit also includes the ranger or guide fess
  • The permit also carters for gorilla trackers who wakes up early in the morning in to the jungle to search for the gorillas in order to communicate to the guides the right location to trace the gorillas which is time saving.

What is excluded in a gorilla permit.

Tracking may not require one day and the following that are excluded in the gorilla permit maybe required. The gorilla permit excludes the accommodation fees, meals and transport to and from the parks.

When to book for a gorilla permit?

A gorilla trekking permit in either Uganda, Rwanda or Congo should be booked 3 to 6 months in advance before trekking dates due to the fact that gorilla trekking permits are competitive and usually get sold out especially during the peak seasons of June to September and December to February where by during these seasons the demand for the permits is always high and as a result one should book in advance to avoid disappointments.

What to pack for gorilla trekking?

During gorilla tracking, one will need a comfortable, hard wearing, waterproof hiking shoes or boots. It is also advisable to wear along-sleeved cotton shirt and light weight long trousers to protect yourself from biting ants.

In Conclusion; it’s important for visitors to note that 10% of fees collected from the gorilla trekking permits goes back to the local communities near and around the gorilla parks. This is the best way of sensitizing the local communities on the importance of park conservation and gorilla protection.
