8-Day Mount Rwenzori Hike Adventure
Overview;
Deep in western Uganda, straddling the equator, lies one of Africa’s best-kept secrets: the Rwenzori Mountains, also known as the “Mountains of the Moon.” These legendary peaks are home to Africa’s third-highest summit, Margherita Peak, and offer an unparalleled trekking experience for true adventurers. If you’re seeking a challenging but breathtakingly rewarding hike, this 8-day Mount Rwenzori hike with Kyooma Gorilla Safaris is the ultimate journey into one of the most unique alpine ecosystems on Earth.
Why Choose the 8-Day Mount Rwenzori Hike?
Unlike other famous African peaks like Kilimanjaro, Rwenzori offers solitude, glacier-covered summits, and an astonishing diversity of landscapes, ranging from dense montane forest to surreal afro-alpine zones. This hike is less commercialized, more rugged, and deeply immersive.
Day-by-Day Itinerary: A Glimpse into the Adventure
Day 1: Nyakalengija – Nyabitaba Hut (2,651 m)
After a pre-hike briefing in Nyakalengija (1,646 m), we begin our trek through the forested foothills. Expect to spot blue monkeys, colobus monkeys, and a variety of birds. After 5–6 hours, we reach Nyabitaba Hut for the night.
Day 2: Nyabitaba – John Matte Hut (3,505 m)
We descend to the Bujuku River, cross Kurt Shafer Bridge, and climb through the bamboo zone into the giant heather. The moss-draped forest is magical and mysterious. Overnight at John Matte Hut.
Day 3: John Matte – Bujuku Hut (3,977 m)
Today, we cross the Bujuku bog (boots required!) and enter the alpine zone. Giant lobelias and groundsels dominate the landscape. The trail leads us to Bujuku Hut at the base of Mount Stanley, Mount Speke, and Mount Baker.
Day 4: Bujuku – Elena Hut (4,541 m)
We ascend steeply toward Elena Hut, our base for the Margherita summit push. The air gets thinner, the terrain more glacial. Rest early for the early morning climb.
Day 5: Margherita Summit (5,109 m) – Kitandara Hut (4,023 m)
Summit Day! We start before dawn, roped in with crampons and ice axes to tackle the glacier. Reaching Margherita Peak, the highest point of Mount Stanley and the third-highest in Africa, is an unforgettable moment. We descend to Kitandara Hut for a well-earned rest.
Day 6: Kitandara – Guy Yeoman Hut (3,261 m)
We cross the Freshfield Pass with panoramic views before descending through boggy sections and rocky trails to Guy Yeoman Hut. This is a tough but scenic day.
Day 7: Guy Yeoman – Nyabitaba Hut
We descend further into the forest zone, retracing our steps while enjoying the serenity of the Rwenzori’s lower slopes.
