Gorilla Trekking Permit: What’s Included and Excluded

Gorilla Trekking Permit: What’s Included and Excluded

Overview;

A gorilla permit is a required document for travelers aiming to visit endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitats. Issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) for Uganda and the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) for Rwanda, this permit is mandatory for accessing gorilla trekking activities in these countries. In Uganda, mountain gorillas can be found only in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, located in the southwestern part of the country. Meanwhile, in Rwanda, gorillas reside in Volcanoes National Park, and in the Democratic Republic of Congo, they are located in Virunga National Park.

The Cost of a Gorilla Permit

Pricing for gorilla permits is one of the most crucial considerations when planning a gorilla trekking experience, as fees may fluctuate based on season and other factors. Permit prices currently stand at:

  • Uganda: $800 per person
  • Rwanda: $1,500 per person
  • East African Citizens: UGX 300,000 per person

Since this permit grants access to observe habituated gorillas in their natural environment, all gorilla trekkers must secure one before their trip.

Inclusions in a Gorilla Permit

A gorilla permit covers several key components:

  1. Park Entrance Fees – Access to the national park.
  2. Gorilla Viewing – One hour spent in the company of a gorilla family (although the trek itself can range from 2 to 7 hours, depending on the gorillas’ location).
  3. Security – Trained rangers ensure safety and security within the park.
  4. Guide and Ranger Fees – Experienced guides and rangers lead the trek.
  5. Gorilla Trackers – These individuals locate the gorilla families early each morning, helping guides know where to lead trekkers, saving time and enhancing the experience.
Exclusions in a Gorilla Permit

Certain essentials are not included in a gorilla permit, which may be required for a comfortable trekking experience:

  • Accommodation – Lodging expenses near the trekking sites.
  • Meals – Meals before, during, and after the trek.
  • Transport – Travel costs to and from the national parks.
Booking Your Gorilla Permit

Due to high demand, it is recommended to book gorilla trekking permits 3 to 6 months in advance. This is particularly during peak seasons from June to September and December to February. Booking ensures availability and avoids last-minute disappointments.

Packing Essentials for Gorilla Trekking
  • Sturdy, Waterproof Hiking Boots – Essential for navigating rugged trails.
  • Long-Sleeved Shirt and Lightweight Trousers – Offers protection from insects and underbrush.
  • Waterproof Jacket – Necessary for the unpredictable rainforest climate.
In Conclusion;

Travelers need to note that 10% of the fees from gorilla permits are allocated back to local communities surrounding the gorilla parks. This initiative helps raise awareness on the importance of conservation and fosters support for gorilla protection within these communities.
