Garamba National Park

Garamba National Park is one of Africa’s most historic and ecologically significant protected areas, a true wilderness that offers a glimpse into the untamed beauty of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Established in 1938, Garamba is one of the oldest national parks in Africa and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located in the northeastern part of the DRC, near the border with South Sudan. The park spans over 4,900 square kilometers and is part of the larger Sudano-Guinean savannah ecosystem. Garamba is a place of vast open plains, dense forests, and winding rivers, making it a haven for wildlife and a destination for those seeking a truly remote and adventurous safari experience.

Endangered Northern White Rhinoceros

Garamba National Park is perhaps best known for its efforts to protect the critically endangered northern white rhinoceros. Although the park once hosted a significant population of these majestic creatures, they have faced severe threats from poaching over the years. Despite these challenges, Garamba remains a symbol of hope and resilience in the fight to protect endangered species. The park is also home to other rare and iconic wildlife. These include elephants, giraffes, hippos, and the elusive Kordofan giraffe, a subspecies found only in this region.

One of the park’s most unique features is its population of African elephants, which are known for their remarkable behavior of forming large herds. These elephants are a testament to the park’s importance as a sanctuary for wildlife. Garamba is also home to predators such as lions, leopards, and hyenas, as well as a variety of antelope species, including the majestic giant eland and the graceful kob. The park’s diverse habitats, from savannahs to woodlands and riverine forests, support an incredible array of biodiversity.

Bird Watching

Birdwatchers will find Garamba National Park a rewarding destination, with over 340 bird species recorded. The park’s wetlands and rivers attract a variety of waterbirds. Its’ savannahs and forests are home to species such as the Abyssinian ground hornbill and the red-throated bee-eater. Whether you’re an avid birder or simply enjoy the beauty of nature, Garamba’s avian diversity is sure to impress.

Garamba’s landscapes

Garamba’s landscapes are as breathtaking as its wildlife. The park is characterized by vast grassy plains, dotted with acacia trees and crisscrossed by rivers such as the Dungu and Garamba. These waterways not only provide vital resources for wildlife but also create stunning scenic backdrops for your safari adventures. The park’s remoteness and untouched beauty make it a place where you can truly disconnect and immerse yourself in the wild.
