Kahuzi-Biega National Park

Kahuzi-Biega National Park is one of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) most iconic and biodiverse protected areas. A stunning destination that offers a unique blend of adventure, wildlife, and natural beauty. It is located in the eastern part of the country, near the city of Bukavu. The park spans approximately 6,000 square kilometers and is named after two dormant volcanoes, Mount Kahuzi and Mount Biega. These volcanoes dominate its landscape. Established in 1970 and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kahuzi-Biega is renowned for its population of eastern lowland gorillas (Grauer’s gorillas). This makes it one of the best places in the world to encounter these magnificent creatures in the wild.

A Haven for Eastern Lowland Gorillas

The Park is one of the last strongholds for the critically endangered eastern lowland gorilla, the largest subspecies of gorilla. Unlike their mountain gorilla cousins, eastern lowland gorillas inhabit lower-altitude forests, and Kahuzi-Biega provides a perfect habitat for them. Trekking through the park’s dense forests to observe these gentle giants is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Watching them interact in their family groups, feed on vegetation, and move gracefully through the forest is both humbling and awe-inspiring.

The park’s gorilla trekking experiences are carefully managed to ensure minimal impact on the animals and their habitat. With the guidance of experienced park rangers, visitors can get up close to these incredible primates while contributing to their conservation through tourism revenue.

Rich Biodiversity and Unique Wildlife

While the eastern lowland gorillas are the park’s star attraction, Kahuzi-Biega is also home to a wide variety of other wildlife. It has diverse habitats, ranging from montane forests to lowland rainforests. These therefore support an array of species, including forest elephants and chimpanzees. Also everal monkey species such as the colobus and blue monkeys. The park is also a sanctuary for the African forest buffalo and the elusive owl-faced monkey, a rare primate found only in this region.

Birdwatchers will find Kahuzi-Biega a paradise, with over 340 bird species recorded. The park’s forests are alive with the calls of colorful birds such as the Ruwenzori turaco, the African green broadbill, and the Congo peafowl. Whether you’re an avid birder or simply enjoy the beauty of nature, the park’s avian diversity is sure to captivate you.

Stunning Landscapes and Scenic Beauty

Kahuzi-Biega National Park is as beautiful as it is biodiverse. With landscapes dominated by the towering peaks of Mount Kahuzi (3,308 meters) and Mount Biega (2,790 meters).  These offer breathtaking views and challenging hiking opportunities. The forests here are lush and verdant, with cascading waterfalls, crystal-clear streams, and dense vegetation that create a sense of tranquility and wonder.

The varied terrain, from high-altitude forests to lowland rainforests, provides a unique opportunity to explore different ecosystems within a single destination. Whether you’re hiking to the summit of Mount Kahuzi, trekking through the lowland forests, or simply enjoying the serene beauty of the park’s landscapes, Kahuzi-Biega offers a truly immersive nature experience.

Conservation Challenges and Efforts

Kahuzi-Biega National Park faces significant challenges, including poaching, deforestation, and human encroachment. The park’s location in a region affected by political instability has made conservation efforts particularly difficult. However, the park’s dedicated rangers and conservation teams, supported by international organizations, work tirelessly to protect its wildlife and habitats. Tourism plays a crucial role in these efforts, providing funding for conservation and creating opportunities for local communities.
