Day 1: Arrival and Ascent to Sasa River Camp
Your adventure begins at the trailhead in Budadiri, Uganda, where you register with the Uganda Wildlife Authority. From here, you start your ascent through the dense farmlands and the lush montane forest, a habitat teeming with wildlife, including monkeys and a variety of bird species.
One of the day’s highlights is the challenging but rewarding climb up the Mudange Cliffs. Also known as the ‘Wall of Death.’ While the name sounds intimidating. the climb offers breathtaking views of the forest canopy and distant landscapes. After about 6–8 hours of trekking, you reach Sasa River Camp (2,900m). where you set up camp and relax for the night.
The second day is the most exhilarating as you push towards Wagagai Peak (4,321m), the highest point on Mt. Elgon. The trail takes you through bamboo forests and alpine meadows, offering stunning vistas along the way. As you gain altitude, the landscape transitions into a unique afro-alpine zone, with giant lobelias and groundsels dotting the terrain.
Reaching Wagagai Peak is a triumphant moment, offering panoramic views over Uganda and Kenya. After celebrating this achievement, you descend to Mude Cave Camp (3,500m) for a well-earned rest. This descent provides an opportunity to appreciate the stunning high-altitude vegetation and, if lucky, spot elusive wildlife like the duiker or rock hyrax.
Day 3: Descend and Departure.
After a hearty breakfast, you begin your descent back to Budadiri. The descent is much quicker than the ascent, allowing you to soak in the beauty of the mountain one last time. Passing through the moorland and lush forest zones, you eventually reach the starting point, where you check out with the park authorities.
From here, you can either relax in Mbale town or continue exploring other attractions in Uganda, such as Sipi Falls or the source of the Nile. Regardless of where you go next, the memories of your Mt. Elgon adventure will stay with you forever.
