Uganda Is Safe for Travel Amid Ebola Reports Linked to DR Congo

Uganda Is Safe for Travel Amid Ebola Reports Linked to DR Congo

Overview;

Uganda continues to welcome tourists from around the world despite recent Ebola reports connected to the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). While international headlines have raised concerns about the outbreak in eastern DRC and a few imported cases detected in Uganda, the country’s tourism sector remains operational. In addition, travelers can still enjoy unforgettable safari experiences with confidence.

Uganda has a long history of successfully managing public health challenges through coordinated efforts between the Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization (WHO), local communities, and tourism stakeholders. The current situation has prompted heightened surveillance and preventive measures. As a result, both residents and visitors remain protected.

Understanding the Current Ebola Situation

The recent Ebola outbreak originated in eastern DRC, particularly in regions close to Uganda’s western border. Health authorities have confirmed that some cases identified in Uganda were linked to individuals who traveled from affected areas in Congo. As a result, Uganda immediately activated its emergency response systems. These responses include contact tracing, health screening, and public awareness campaigns.

The World Health Organization and Uganda’s Ministry of Health continue to work together to monitor the situation and strengthen preparedness across the country. Enhanced screening measures have been implemented at border points, health facilities, and key transportation hubs. These interventions are designed to quickly identify and isolate suspected cases. Consequently, the measures help minimize the risk of wider transmission.

Why Tourists Can Still Visit Uganda Safely

Most of Uganda’s leading tourism destinations are located far from the affected outbreak zones. Popular attractions such as Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Murchison Falls National Park, Kibale Forest National Park, and Lake Bunyonyi continue to receive visitors under normal operating conditions.

Tour operators, lodges, and park authorities maintain strict hygiene protocols and closely follow guidance from health officials. Visitors are encouraged to practice routine health precautions such as regular handwashing, using sanitizers, and reporting any illness promptly during their travels.

Uganda’s tourism industry has demonstrated resilience during previous health situations and remains committed to providing safe and memorable experiences for international guests.

Gorilla Trekking Remains Open and Safe

One of Uganda’s biggest attractions is mountain gorilla trekking. The gorilla trekking experience in Bwindi and Mgahinga remains open. Furthermore, park authorities continue to enforce conservation and health regulations that protect both visitors and wildlife.

These regulations already include measures such as maintaining a safe distance from gorillas, limiting group sizes, and preventing anyone who is unwell from participating in trekking activities. Such practices naturally support broader public health protection efforts.

Travelers can therefore continue planning their dream gorilla safari while staying informed about any travel advisories issued by official authorities.

Uganda’s Strong Health Response

Uganda is internationally recognized for its experience in handling infectious disease outbreaks. Health officials have rapidly increased screening at border crossings and strengthened surveillance systems in areas considered at higher risk due to proximity to DRC.

The government has also worked with international partners to improve laboratory testing capacity, community awareness, and emergency preparedness. These measures provide additional reassurance for tourists considering a visit during this period.

Travel Tips for Visitors

When traveling to Uganda during any public health alert, visitors should:

  • Follow official travel advisories from their home countries.
  • Maintain good personal hygiene practices.
  • Use hand sanitizers where available.
  • Purchase comprehensive travel insurance.
  • Stay informed through reputable health and tourism sources.
  • Follow guidance provided by tour operators and local authorities.

These simple precautions help ensure a smooth and enjoyable travel experience.

Great time with gorilla trekking and Kiiza I had a great time doing gorilla trekking at Bwindi. The highlight of the trip (besides the gorillas, of course) was Kiiza, the driver/guide with whom I spent two days. Great guy, great personality, knowledgeable and really helped to elevate the bar. Wish you all the success, Kiiza! The only problem I had involved the visas required to go from Rwanda to Uganda and back. I ended up spending more than would be necessary if I had received the correct information. A small nuisance when considered the experience as a whole.

Great 4 days tour Rwanda/Uganda We had an amazing 4 days tour starting Kigali. The organization from Kyooma was very good. Mwijie was very fast in responding to messages and always reachable. Our Guide and Driver Kiiza did an excellent job bringing us to all our destinations safely & in time, and telling so many interesting stories about the country, the animals and locals, and much more. We had a fantastic time - thank you Kiiza. The highlights: so many. The amazing gorillas, the chimps at Kyambura Gorge, the playing golden monkeys, the >50 elefants at Kazinga Channel and much more. Great experiences!

An Experience We Will Treasure Forever Our 8-day journey in Uganda with Kyooma Gorilla Safari was truly unforgettable. From the very first contact, we felt listened to and genuinely cared for, with a perfectly tailor-made itinerary designed around our needs. The accommodations exceeded our expectations, the food was excellent, and every detail was thoughtfully organized. Our guide, Edgar, was not only a skilled and safe driver, but also a wonderful companion throughout the trip: knowledgeable, kind, and always ready to share insights, with very good English. Meeting the gorillas was an incredibly emotional, once-in-a-lifetime experience. We were especially grateful for the support in arranging a sedan chair for my mother, which made this extraordinary moment possible for her as well. We couldn’t have asked for more. Highly recommended!

Super bravi e organizzati!!!

High recomendation to reach out this company when planning your trip The Kyooma Gorilla Safari made our trip unforgettable. Mwije, tha manager, prepared every single detail of our journey, adapted to our needs (pick up in Rwanda, Kigali, set off in Uganda, Lake Bunyuni, incl. golden monkeys and gorilla tracking), and to our limited budget. Do not hesitate to ask her about anything, she also helped me to arrange medical treatment in local hospital! And the guide/driver Muhwezi Shever is so professional, educated and willing person always smiling. And bought us a tone of mangos in the market :-D Accomodation and food during our trip always on very high level.

Incredible 2 day gorilla trek Our experience with Kyooma for a 2 day Mountain Gorilla trek was exceptional! The entire experience was more than we could have hoped for, seeing a family of 10 gorillas up close was unforgettable. Highly recommend taking the 2 day option to visit the genocide memorial and enjoy the lodge and area, including the women's collective. Mwije (office manager at Kyooma) was so friendly and responsive, planning was easy and seamless. Our guide Robert was knowledgeable and friendly and a great driver. The accommodation at Da Vinci Lodge was excellent - the food was terrific (we chose our menu for each meal and acccomodating a vegetarian diet was no problem) and enjoyed a warm fire in our room and hot water bottles in our beds. Everyone went out of their way to make it a comfortable and worry free trip from beginning to end. Very strongly recommend Kyooma!!
