Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary – Uganda’s Only Wild Rhinos

It is the only place in Uganda where you can see wild rhinos in their natural habitat. Located in Nakasongola District, about 170 km (3 hours) from Kampala, the sanctuary covers 7,000 hectares of protected land and is home to southern white rhinos. It plays a crucial role in Uganda’s rhino conservation efforts, aiming to reintroduce rhinos into the country’s national parks.  By providing a safe and nurturing environment, the sanctuary helps to increase the rhino population, which will eventually be released into the wild.

Rhino Tracking – A Unique Experience

One of the main highlights at Ziwa is on-foot rhino tracking, where visitors can get up close (at a safe distance) to observe these magnificent creatures in their natural environment. Unlike traditional game drives, this walking safari allows for an intimate and educational experience with expert rangers who provide insights into rhino behavior and conservation.

Other Wildlife & Birdlife

While rhinos are the main attraction, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is also home to:

  • Antelopes, Bushbucks, Warthogs, and Monkeys
  • Over 350 bird species, including the rare Shoebill Stork
  • Nile crocodiles and hippos in nearby wetlands

Visitors can also enjoy:

  • Birdwatching tours
  • Nature walks
  • Canoe safaris in the Lugogo Swamp (great for spotting the Shoebill)

Best Time to Visit

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is open year-round, with early mornings and late afternoons being the best times for rhino tracking.
