The Big Five in Uganda

The Big Five in Uganda

Overview;

Uganda, known as the Pearl of Africa, is a top destination for wildlife enthusiasts. The country boasts an incredible diversity of animals, including The Big Five: lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, and rhinoceroses. These animals were initially termed the “Big Five” by hunters due to their difficulty to hunt on foot, but today, they are the star attractions of Uganda’s national parks. Here’s where you can find them:

  1. Lions

10-Day Uganda Safari

Lions, the kings of the jungle, can be spotted in several national parks in Uganda. The largest lion population resides in Queen Elizabeth National Park, particularly in the Ishasha sector, where the rare tree-climbing lions can be found resting on fig trees. Murchison Falls National Park also hosts a significant number of these majestic predators, often seen on early morning game drives.

  1. Leopards

Leopards are the most elusive of the Big Five, renowned for their nocturnal habits and exceptional ability to camouflage themselves in dense vegetation. They are found in several protected areas, including Murchison Falls National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, and Kidepo Valley National Park. Spotting a leopard requires patience and a keen eye, but the reward is an unforgettable sight of this magnificent feline.

  1. Elephants

Amboseli National Park

African elephants, the largest land mammals, roam freely in Uganda’s savannahs and forests. Murchison Falls National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park have large populations of savannah elephants, while Kibale National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest are home to smaller forest elephants. These gentle giants can be seen moving in herds, particularly near water sources.

  1. Buffaloes

The Cape buffalo is a common sight in Uganda’s national parks. They can be seen in large herds grazing across the plains of Queen Elizabeth National Park, Murchison Falls National Park, and Kidepo Valley National Park. Despite their calm appearance, buffaloes are considered one of the most dangerous animals in Africa due to their unpredictable nature.

  1. Rhinoceroses

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Rhinoceroses are the rarest of the Big Five in Uganda. Due to poaching, they were wiped out in the wild but have been successfully reintroduced at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. This conservation area, located on the way to Murchison Falls National Park, is the only place in Uganda where visitors can track rhinos on foot, making for a thrilling experience.

Best Places to See the Big Five in Uganda
  • Murchison Falls National Park – Home to lions, leopards, elephants, and buffaloes, with rhinos nearby at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary.
  • Queen Elizabeth National Park – Famous for tree-climbing lions and a strong population of leopards, elephants, and buffaloes.
  • Kidepo Valley National Park – A remote and less-visited gem where all except rhinos can be found.
  • Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary – The only place to see rhinos in Uganda.
Conclusion;

Uganda with Kyooma Gorilla Safaris offers an exceptional safari experience, allowing visitors to witness the Big Five in their natural habitats. Whether you’re exploring the savannah plains or tracking rhinos on foot, the thrill of encountering these iconic animals is unmatched. Plan your safari adventure today and discover why Uganda is a wildlife lover’s paradise.

Great time with gorilla trekking and Kiiza I had a great time doing gorilla trekking at Bwindi. The highlight of the trip (besides the gorillas, of course) was Kiiza, the driver/guide with whom I spent two days. Great guy, great personality, knowledgeable and really helped to elevate the bar. Wish you all the success, Kiiza! The only problem I had involved the visas required to go from Rwanda to Uganda and back. I ended up spending more than would be necessary if I had received the correct information. A small nuisance when considered the experience as a whole.

Great 4 days tour Rwanda/Uganda We had an amazing 4 days tour starting Kigali. The organization from Kyooma was very good. Mwijie was very fast in responding to messages and always reachable. Our Guide and Driver Kiiza did an excellent job bringing us to all our destinations safely & in time, and telling so many interesting stories about the country, the animals and locals, and much more. We had a fantastic time - thank you Kiiza. The highlights: so many. The amazing gorillas, the chimps at Kyambura Gorge, the playing golden monkeys, the >50 elefants at Kazinga Channel and much more. Great experiences!

An Experience We Will Treasure Forever Our 8-day journey in Uganda with Kyooma Gorilla Safari was truly unforgettable. From the very first contact, we felt listened to and genuinely cared for, with a perfectly tailor-made itinerary designed around our needs. The accommodations exceeded our expectations, the food was excellent, and every detail was thoughtfully organized. Our guide, Edgar, was not only a skilled and safe driver, but also a wonderful companion throughout the trip: knowledgeable, kind, and always ready to share insights, with very good English. Meeting the gorillas was an incredibly emotional, once-in-a-lifetime experience. We were especially grateful for the support in arranging a sedan chair for my mother, which made this extraordinary moment possible for her as well. We couldn’t have asked for more. Highly recommended!

Super bravi e organizzati!!!

High recomendation to reach out this company when planning your trip The Kyooma Gorilla Safari made our trip unforgettable. Mwije, tha manager, prepared every single detail of our journey, adapted to our needs (pick up in Rwanda, Kigali, set off in Uganda, Lake Bunyuni, incl. golden monkeys and gorilla tracking), and to our limited budget. Do not hesitate to ask her about anything, she also helped me to arrange medical treatment in local hospital! And the guide/driver Muhwezi Shever is so professional, educated and willing person always smiling. And bought us a tone of mangos in the market :-D Accomodation and food during our trip always on very high level.

Incredible 2 day gorilla trek Our experience with Kyooma for a 2 day Mountain Gorilla trek was exceptional! The entire experience was more than we could have hoped for, seeing a family of 10 gorillas up close was unforgettable. Highly recommend taking the 2 day option to visit the genocide memorial and enjoy the lodge and area, including the women's collective. Mwije (office manager at Kyooma) was so friendly and responsive, planning was easy and seamless. Our guide Robert was knowledgeable and friendly and a great driver. The accommodation at Da Vinci Lodge was excellent - the food was terrific (we chose our menu for each meal and acccomodating a vegetarian diet was no problem) and enjoyed a warm fire in our room and hot water bottles in our beds. Everyone went out of their way to make it a comfortable and worry free trip from beginning to end. Very strongly recommend Kyooma!!
