A Green Season Safari in Uganda

A Green Season Safari in Uganda

Overview;

Uganda’s green season, often called the low or rainy season, is one of the country’s best-kept safari secrets. While many travelers plan their trips around the dry months, those who choose a green season safari in Uganda are rewarded with breathtaking scenery, fewer tourists, excellent wildlife encounters, and better value for money. At Kyooma Gorilla Safaris, we believe this season offers a richer, more intimate way to explore the Pearl of Africa.

What Is the Green Season in Uganda?

Uganda’s green season typically runs from March to May and October to November. During these months, short and refreshing rains transform the landscape into a lush paradise. Forests glow emerald green, rivers swell with life, and national parks take on a dramatic, photogenic beauty.

Unlike heavy monsoon rains in some destinations, Uganda’s showers are often brief and followed by sunshine, leaving plenty of time for safari activities.

Why Choose a Green Season Safari in Uganda?
  1. Stunning Scenery & Photography

The green season paints Uganda at its most beautiful. Rolling savannahs, misty rainforests, and blooming wildflowers create incredible backdrops for photography. Wildlife stands out sharply against the fresh green grass, making this an ideal time for photographers and nature lovers.

  1. Fewer Tourists, More Exclusive Experiences

With fewer visitors in the parks, game drives and primate treks feel more personal and unhurried. You’ll enjoy quieter trails in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, less crowded tracks in Queen Elizabeth National Park, and more flexibility during activities—perfect for travelers seeking privacy and authenticity.

  1. Excellent Wildlife Viewing

Contrary to popular belief, wildlife viewing during the green season is still exceptional. Animals remain active, and the abundance of fresh grass attracts herbivores, which in turn draw predators. Migratory birds are also present, making this the best season for birdwatching in Uganda.

  1. Prime Time for Birding Safaris

Uganda is home to over 1,000 bird species, and the green season is a paradise for bird enthusiasts. Colorful migrants join resident species, especially in places like Mabamba Swamp, Kibale Forest, and Semuliki National Park.

  1. Better Value for Money

Many lodges offer green season rates, meaning lower accommodation costs without compromising comfort. This makes luxury and mid-range safaris more accessible. With Kyooma Gorilla Safaris, travelers can enjoy tailor-made itineraries that maximize value while maintaining high-quality experiences.

Gorilla Trekking in the Green Season

One of the most frequently asked questions by travelers is whether gorilla trekking in Uganda is possible during the green season. The answer is yes, and it can be gratifying.

  • Gorilla families are habituated year-round
  • Permits are still available and sometimes easier to secure
  • Trekking trails are greener and more scenic

While trails may be muddier, the experience of meeting mountain gorillas in a misty rainforest is magical and unforgettable.

Best Places to Visit During a Green Season Safari

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park: Gorilla Trekking in a Lush Rainforest

During the green season, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park becomes a true emerald jungle. Light rains refresh the ancient forest, creating misty mornings and dramatic scenery that enhance the magic of mountain gorilla trekking. The park is home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, along with chimpanzees, forest elephants, and over 350 bird species.

Green season trekking offers quieter trails, easier permit availability, and exceptional photography as the forest canopy glows with life. Birders are especially rewarded, as Bwindi hosts several Albertine Rift endemics that are more active during this period.

Queen Elizabeth National Park: Wildlife & Water in Full Bloom

The green season transforms Queen Elizabeth National Park into a wildlife-rich paradise. Fresh grasses attract large herds of buffalo, antelope, and elephants, followed closely by predators such as lions and leopards. The famous tree-climbing lions of Ishasha are often spotted resting in fig trees overlooking the plains.

The Kazinga Channel is particularly spectacular during this season, with high concentrations of hippos, crocodiles, and water birds. Migratory birds add vibrant color, making Queen Elizabeth one of the best green season parks for both game viewing and birding.

Murchison Falls National Park: Dramatic Landscapes at Their Best

Uganda’s largest park is at its most photogenic during the green season. Murchison Falls National Park features rolling savannahs, palm-dotted landscapes, and the mighty Nile River at full strength. The increased water volume makes the Murchison Falls thunder more powerfully as the river forces itself through a narrow gorge.

Wildlife remains abundant, with giraffes, elephants, lions, and Uganda kob commonly seen on game drives. Boat cruises to the base of the falls and to the Nile Delta are especially rewarding, offering close encounters with hippos, crocodiles, and aquatic birds.

Kibale Forest National Park: Chimpanzees & Primates in Peak Condition

The green season is an excellent time to visit Kibale Forest National Park, the primate capital of East Africa. Abundant fruiting trees make chimpanzees more active and vocal, increasing chances of memorable encounters during chimpanzee tracking and habituation experiences.

The forest’s dense greenery also supports 12 other primate species and over 370 bird species. With fewer visitors and cooler temperatures, guided forest walks are more relaxed and immersive.

Lake Mburo National Park: Compact, Scenic & Peaceful

Lake Mburo National Park is ideal for a short green season safari or as a stopover between Entebbe and western Uganda. The rains bring fresh grass that attracts zebras, impalas, elands, and buffalo. The park’s rolling hills and lakes become beautifully green, creating a calm and intimate safari atmosphere.

Lake Mburo is one of the few parks in Uganda offering walking safaris and horseback safaris, which are especially enjoyable during the cooler green season.

Semuliki National Park: Birding & Unique Rainforest Experience

For travelers seeking something different, Semuliki National Park shines during the green season. This lowland tropical rainforest is influenced by the Congo Basin and hosts unique wildlife and bird species not found elsewhere in Uganda.

Birding is exceptional, with many migratory species present, while the forest feels alive with butterflies, insects, and primates. The Sempaya Hot Springs are particularly impressive after rainfall.

A green season safari in Uganda is ideal if you:

Great time with gorilla trekking and Kiiza I had a great time doing gorilla trekking at Bwindi. The highlight of the trip (besides the gorillas, of course) was Kiiza, the driver/guide with whom I spent two days. Great guy, great personality, knowledgeable and really helped to elevate the bar. Wish you all the success, Kiiza! The only problem I had involved the visas required to go from Rwanda to Uganda and back. I ended up spending more than would be necessary if I had received the correct information. A small nuisance when considered the experience as a whole.

Great 4 days tour Rwanda/Uganda We had an amazing 4 days tour starting Kigali. The organization from Kyooma was very good. Mwijie was very fast in responding to messages and always reachable. Our Guide and Driver Kiiza did an excellent job bringing us to all our destinations safely & in time, and telling so many interesting stories about the country, the animals and locals, and much more. We had a fantastic time - thank you Kiiza. The highlights: so many. The amazing gorillas, the chimps at Kyambura Gorge, the playing golden monkeys, the >50 elefants at Kazinga Channel and much more. An Experience We Will Treasure Forever Our 8-day journey in Uganda with Kyooma Gorilla Safari was truly unforgettable. From the very first contact, we felt listened to and genuinely cared for, with a perfectly tailor-made itinerary designed around our needs. The accommodations exceeded our expectations, the food was excellent, and every detail was thoughtfully organized. Our guide, Edgar, was not only a skilled and safe driver, but also a wonderful companion throughout the trip: knowledgeable, kind, and always ready to share insights, with very good English. Meeting the gorillas was an incredibly emotional, once-in-a-lifetime experience. We were especially grateful for the support in arranging a sedan chair for my mother, which made this extraordinary moment possible for her as well. We couldn’t have asked for more. Highly recommended!

Super bravi e organizzati!!!

High recomendation to reach out this company when planning your trip The Kyooma Gorilla Safari made our trip unforgettable. Mwije, tha manager, prepared every single detail of our journey, adapted to our needs (pick up in Rwanda, Kigali, set off in Uganda, Lake Bunyuni, incl. golden monkeys and gorilla tracking), and to our limited budget. Do not hesitate to ask her about anything, she also helped me to arrange medical treatment in local hospital! And the guide/driver Muhwezi Shever is so professional, educated and willing person always smiling. And bought us a tone of mangos in the market :-D Accomodation and food during our trip always on very high level.

Incredible 2 day gorilla trek Our experience with Kyooma for a 2 day Mountain Gorilla trek was exceptional! The entire experience was more than we could have hoped for, seeing a family of 10 gorillas up close was unforgettable. Highly recommend taking the 2 day option to visit the genocide memorial and enjoy the lodge and area, including the women's collective. Mwije (office manager at Kyooma) was so friendly and responsive, planning was easy and seamless. Our guide Robert was knowledgeable and friendly and a great driver. The accommodation at Da Vinci Lodge was excellent - the food was terrific (we chose our menu for each meal and acccomodating a vegetarian diet was no problem) and enjoyed a warm fire in our room and hot water bottles in our beds. Everyone went out of their way to make it a comfortable and worry free trip from beginning to end. Very strongly recommend Kyooma!!
