Wildlife Viewing in Serengeti National Park

Wildlife Viewing in Serengeti National Park

Overview;

Few places on Earth can match the breathtaking wildlife encounters found in Serengeti National Park. Stretching across over 14,700 square kilometers of endless golden plains in northern Tanzania, the Serengeti is one of Africa’s most celebrated safari destinations. It is renowned for its incredible concentration of wildlife, spectacular landscapes, and the world-famous Great Migration that attracts visitors from every corner of the globe. The park offers exceptional game viewing throughout the year, making it a dream destination for photographers, nature enthusiasts, families, and adventure travelers alike.

Whether you are searching for the legendary Big Five, hoping to witness a dramatic river crossing during the Great Migration, or simply wanting to experience Africa’s untouched wilderness, a safari in Serengeti National Park promises unforgettable memories. Kyooma Gorilla Safaris offers expertly guided Tanzania safari packages that allow travelers to experience the very best of the Serengeti while combining their journey with other iconic destinations across East Africa.

Why Serengeti National Park is Famous

The Serengeti is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and forms part of the larger Serengeti-Mara ecosystem that stretches into Kenya’s Maasai Mara. Its name comes from the Maasai word Siringet, meaning “endless plains,” a fitting description for its vast open grasslands.

The park is internationally recognized for:

  • The Great Wildebeest Migration
  • Exceptional predator sightings
  • Year-round wildlife viewing
  • Diverse ecosystems
  • Spectacular African landscapes
  • Luxury, mid-range, and budget safari experiences

Serengeti is home to one of the richest wildlife populations in Africa, supporting thousands of mammals and over 540 bird species.

Incredible Wildlife You Can See in Serengeti National Park

The Big Five

One of the biggest attractions is the opportunity to see Africa’s famous Big Five:

  • Lion
  • Leopard
  • Elephant
  • Buffalo
  • Black Rhino

The Serengeti boasts one of Africa’s highest concentrations of lions, while leopards are commonly spotted resting in acacia trees, especially around the Seronera Valley. Elephants roam the woodlands, buffalo gather in large herds, and black rhinos can occasionally be seen in protected areas.

Witness the Great Wildebeest Migration

The Great Migration is often described as the greatest wildlife spectacle on Earth.

Every year, over:

  • 1.5 million wildebeest
  • 200,000 zebras
  • Hundreds of thousands of gazelles

travel across the Serengeti ecosystem following seasonal rains in search of fresh grazing. Along the way, they face dramatic river crossings where crocodiles lie in wait, while lions, cheetahs, hyenas, and leopards follow the herds in search of prey.

Watching thousands of animals move across the plains is an experience unlike any other.

Predators of the Serengeti

The Serengeti is one of the best places in Africa to observe predators in action.

Visitors frequently encounter:

  • Lions hunting in prides
  • Cheetahs sprinting across open plains
  • Leopards hiding in riverine forests
  • Spotted hyenas
  • Black-backed jackals
  • Golden jackals

Early morning and late afternoon game drives provide excellent opportunities to witness natural hunting behavior.

Other Wildlife Species

Besides the famous predators, Serengeti supports an astonishing variety of wildlife including:

  • Giraffes
  • Hippos
  • Nile crocodiles
  • Warthogs
  • Elands
  • Topis
  • Hartebeests
  • Impalas
  • Waterbucks
  • Dik-diks
  • Reedbucks
  • Baboons
  • Vervet monkeys
  • African wild cats
  • Servals

Every game drive reveals something new, making each safari unique.

Bird Watching Paradise

Bird lovers will find Serengeti equally rewarding.

More than 540 bird species have been recorded, including:

  • Secretary birds
  • Kori bustards
  • Ostriches
  • Martial eagles
  • Fish eagles
  • Lilac-breasted rollers
  • Superb starlings
  • Vultures
  • Hornbills
  • Bee-eaters
  • Flamingos (seasonally)

Birding is excellent throughout the year, particularly during the green season when migratory species arrive.

Best Wildlife Viewing Areas in Serengeti

Central Serengeti (Seronera)

Known as the heart of the park, Seronera offers exceptional wildlife viewing throughout the year.

Here you can commonly see:

  • Lions
  • Leopards
  • Hippos
  • Elephants
  • Cheetahs
  • Hyenas

Its permanent water sources attract wildlife in every season.

Northern Serengeti

The northern region is famous for the Mara River crossings during the Great Migration.

Visitors may witness:

  • Thousands of wildebeest crossing crocodile-filled rivers
  • Large crocodiles
  • Lions
  • Leopards
  • Elephants

Western Corridor

The Grumeti River attracts migrating herds and giant Nile crocodiles.

This area is especially rewarding between May and July.

Southern Serengeti

The southern plains become the calving grounds between January and March.

Thousands of wildebeest calves are born here, attracting predators and creating remarkable wildlife viewing opportunities.

One of the greatest advantages of Serengeti National Park is that wildlife viewing is outstanding all year.

Great time with gorilla trekking and Kiiza I had a great time doing gorilla trekking at Bwindi. The highlight of the trip (besides the gorillas, of course) was Kiiza, the driver/guide with whom I spent two days. Great guy, great personality, knowledgeable and really helped to elevate the bar. Wish you all the success, Kiiza! The only problem I had involved the visas required to go from Rwanda to Uganda and back. I ended up spending more than would be necessary if I had received the correct information. A small nuisance when considered the experience as a whole.

Great 4 days tour Rwanda/Uganda We had an amazing 4 days tour starting Kigali. The organization from Kyooma was very good. Mwijie was very fast in responding to messages and always reachable. Our Guide and Driver Kiiza did an excellent job bringing us to all our destinations safely & in time, and telling so many interesting stories about the country, the animals and locals, and much more. We had a fantastic time - thank you Kiiza. The highlights: so many. The amazing gorillas, the chimps at Kyambura Gorge, the playing golden monkeys, the >50 elefants at Kazinga Channel and much more. Great experiences!

An Experience We Will Treasure Forever Our 8-day journey in Uganda with Kyooma Gorilla Safari was truly unforgettable. From the very first contact, we felt listened to and genuinely cared for, with a perfectly tailor-made itinerary designed around our needs. The accommodations exceeded our expectations, the food was excellent, and every detail was thoughtfully organized. Our guide, Edgar, was not only a skilled and safe driver, but also a wonderful companion throughout the trip: knowledgeable, kind, and always ready to share insights, with very good English. Meeting the gorillas was an incredibly emotional, once-in-a-lifetime experience. We were especially grateful for the support in arranging a sedan chair for my mother, which made this extraordinary moment possible for her as well. We couldn’t have asked for more. Highly recommended!

Super bravi e organizzati!!!

High recomendation to reach out this company when planning your trip The Kyooma Gorilla Safari made our trip unforgettable. Mwije, tha manager, prepared every single detail of our journey, adapted to our needs (pick up in Rwanda, Kigali, set off in Uganda, Lake Bunyuni, incl. golden monkeys and gorilla tracking), and to our limited budget. Do not hesitate to ask her about anything, she also helped me to arrange medical treatment in local hospital! And the guide/driver Muhwezi Shever is so professional, educated and willing person always smiling. And bought us a tone of mangos in the market :-D Accomodation and food during our trip always on very high level.

Incredible 2 day gorilla trek Our experience with Kyooma for a 2 day Mountain Gorilla trek was exceptional! The entire experience was more than we could have hoped for, seeing a family of 10 gorillas up close was unforgettable. Highly recommend taking the 2 day option to visit the genocide memorial and enjoy the lodge and area, including the women's collective. Mwije (office manager at Kyooma) was so friendly and responsive, planning was easy and seamless. Our guide Robert was knowledgeable and friendly and a great driver. The accommodation at Da Vinci Lodge was excellent - the food was terrific (we chose our menu for each meal and acccomodating a vegetarian diet was no problem) and enjoyed a warm fire in our room and hot water bottles in our beds. Everyone went out of their way to make it a comfortable and worry free trip from beginning to end. Very strongly recommend Kyooma!!
